For beginners, it is crucial to choose a suitable instrument, if you choose the right one, you will go further and further down the road, if you choose the wrong one, you may give up this hobby, so it is necessary to know how to choose.
1, The Size of Ukulele
Soprano, 21inch, features a smaller size for easy portability and performance, and is the original size of the ukulele, with a smaller volume and narrower range.
Concert, 23inch, is the most common size and can be used for fingerpicking, and is also suitable for advanced practice.
Tenor, 26inch, is a larger size and has a better resonance of tone than the Concert, which has a better performance.
If you have no special requirements, we recommend you to choose 23 inch Concert.
2, The Wood of Ukulele
The choice of ukulele wood determines its own sound as well as its appearance, and here I will list three of the more common types of wood.
Mahogany, the tone is characterized by warm and full, the sustain effect is relatively good, the low and medium frequency performance is more prominent, but high frequency is not obvious. It's one of the most common wood, the wood itself color is light brown, and the wood grain is straight and uniform.
Spruce Wood, the characterized of tone is bright, clear, penetrating, good resonance and strong graininess. It's a relatively premium wood, but it's also more expensive. The color of the wood is beige or cream, and the grain is straight and fine.
KOA Wood, which some luthiers praise as the top material for ukuleles, is characterized by a delicate, sweet sound with a low volume. The grain is darker and pronounced.
3, The Differences between Plywood, Solid Top and All Solid
Plywood: Synthetic wood board, thicker overall, a common board process for entry-level ukuleles.
Solid Top: Ukulele Top is processed from pure natural wood, which can better restore the resonance and sound wave transmission ability of the wood itself
All Solid: The entire body is made of uncut synthetic wood, and is the most expensive type of ukulele, with a bright, pure tone that better maintains the tonal characteristics of the wood itself.
